I work primarily in 2D mixed-media using acrylic paint and found papers. My work combines a photo-transfer process and hand-painted elements, often juxtaposing hard-edge graphics with loose brushwork. Whether figurative or abstract, the artwork is highly gestural using collage-like elements that render movement. No matter the subject matter, I approach a painting both intuitively and systematically. I put something down on the canvas and then react to it. I rework a surface multiple times, simplifying shapes, and obscuring or eliminating aspects of the work altogether. By submerging and then excavating shapes, I create layers that are obliterated as well as assimilated until something interesting emerges. I know when something I’ve been working on is successful when the amalgamation of all of this order and disorder reveals something beautiful.
